가장 오래된 화석은 600만 년 전인 신생대 초기로 개미의 출현은 중생대 백악기의 중, 후기라고 한다. 주로 땅 속 또는 고목 등에 둥지를 틀고 살아갔으며, 전 세계에 분포했고, 기록된 개미의 종은 5000여종이며 기록되지 않은 종까지 합하면 1만 500종에 이른다고 한다.
Method -
2. 조사지역 영역(1m x 1m)을 정한다. 한반도에는 5아과 39속 139종이 분포한다.

개미의 정의는 개미과에 속하는 곤충의 총칭으로, 한자어로 의(蟻)가 표준어였고, 누의(螻蟻)·구(蚼)·현구(玄駒)·의양(蟻蛘) 등으로도 불리었으며, 우리말로는 가얌이·얌이라 하였다.
